Burgers and dumplings replace cakes and scones in a number of unique versions of a very English tradition, reports LondonTown.com

-- /EPR NETWORK/ -- Afternoon Tea is one tradition that London has perfected and there are countless venues serving finger sandwiches, dainty cakes and buttery scones. But, for those who fancy something a little bit different, there are also a number of unique takes on this very English tradition. From mini burgers and milkshakes to dumplings served with tea, there's something for all tastes.

Replacing cucumber sandwiches and jam-filled scones with burgers and doughnuts, BRGR.CO Soho has given a long-standing British tradition a radical American makeover. Served in the humble central London restaurant, the location is as far removed from the traditional afternoon tea setting as you can get. The menu continues the theme with diners treated to three sliders served with mini fries, warm doughnuts filled with salted caramel, a raspberry cheesecake and a chocolate brownie. Traditional British tea is available as refreshment but a more tempting option many be the vanilla milkshake or glass of prosecco.

Also serving up burgers instead of pastries is the Sanctum Soho Hotel. Offering a masculine version of a typically girly affair, the menu includes seared steak with peppers and mushrooms, a lamb and potato hotpot, mini beef burgers, a roast beef and horseradish Yorkshire pudding, anda chocolate fudge cake served with Jack Daniels ice cream. The banquet is then concluded with and a silver tankard of JD and a complimentary cigar to be enjoyed of the rooftop terrace.

Two notable venues for an oriental take on the British custom are the TeanamuChaya Teahouse and the Grand Imperial restaurant. Located within a converted Notting Hill house, the TeanamuChaya Teahouse provides an intimate and ceremonial experience. Guests are guided through an impressive selection of teas and served with a number of tempting delicacies, including vegetarian dumplings with chill oil, yuzu ginger preserve and cheddar sandwiches, mango seed cake and peanut sesame cookies. Additional touches such as a self-boiling kettle and the tranquil décor ensure it is a true all-round experience. Additionally, the Grand Imperial restaurant is another option for an oriental take on a typically sugar laden custom. Served in the Feng-shui designed restaurant, Hong Kong Cantonese delicacies such as prawn dumplings, duck rolls, crispy soft shell crab and an oven baked egg tart are presented on a three-tier cake stand, just like a traditional afternoon tea offering. However, the highlight is the unlimited refills of Chinese tea, with a number of floral and fermented options.

During the summer, there's also the option of taking tea in one of London's most famous buildings, the Houses of Parliament. As part of the summer behind the scenes tours, visitors can now choose to enjoy the optional add-on of afternoon tea. Taken in the historic Pugin Room in the House of Commons, diners will have wonderful views over the River Thames. Despite the unique venue, the menu stays true to tradition with options including Scottish salmon with cream cheese, lemon curd and chive on a mini bagel, and egg mayonnaise and watercress sandwiches; plus, sultana scones with jam and clotted cream and Valronha chocolate delice.
