NYC Periodontist Concerned about the Connection between Breast Cancer and Gum Disease

New York, NY, February 3, 2016 — /EPR NETWORK/ — Dr. Navid Rahmain, a top periodontist at Contemporary Periodontics & Implant Surgery was concerned to read about a study into the connection between periodontal disease and an increased risk of breast cancer in postmenopausal women.

As a periodontist, Dr. Rahmani offers a reliable gingivitis treatment to his patients, and is always interested to learn about the possible links between periodontal disease and other common health conditions and tries to ensure his patients are well informed about these risks. This most recent study was published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, which is a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research.

Researchers for this study monitored 73,737 postmenopausal women who were enrolled in the Women’s Health Initiative Observational Study. None of the participants had previously had breast cancer, but 26.1% had periodontal disease. Previous studies into the effects of periodontal disease had shown it could be influenced by smoking so this factor was taken into account.

The mean follow-up was 6.7 years, after which 2,124 women were diagnosed with breast cancer, with the risk being 14% higher in those with periodontal disease. Amongst women who had quit smoking within the last 20 years, the risk was 36% higher, indicating the effects of smoking are slow to be reversed. Further studies are needed to establish a causal link between these two diseases, but this latest study is just one of many that highlight the risk periodontal disease can present to general health.

Periodontal disease has already been associated with stroke, heart disease and diabetes and previous researchers have found links with some types of cancers, including head and neck and esophageal, pancreatic and lung cancers. While periodontists can provide expert care and a periodontal disease treatment for patients with advanced and chronic periodontal disease, Dr. Rahmani would rather see his patients enjoy good oral health, especially as this can help protect general health.

Dr. Rahmani is dedicating his professional career towards offering gum disease treatment and educating patients on the importance of good periodontal health. He is anxious for patients to know about possible connections between periodontal disease and serious health conditions so they can take action to protect their overall health.
