CHICAGO, IL, 2016-May-09 — /EPR Network/ — The Golden Triangle is proud to present “Journey to Nagaland”, an exhibition of unique tribal architecture, furniture, tools, attire and jewelry from May 20th – June 30th. A discussion lead by Chicago-based Academic + Curator Alex Aubry, RA, will explore the topic of “Cross-Cultural Encounters through Art & Design” on Tuesday, May 24th from 6-8pm. Opening remarks will be made by Dr. Madhuvanti Ghose, the Alsdorf Associate Curator of Indian, Southeast Asian, Himalayan, and Islamic Art at The Art Institute of Chicago.

Still one of the world’s most isolated societies, the Naga were once enthusiastic headhunters subjected to ‘civilizing missions’ by the British Empire throughout the 19th century. The Naga are talented artisans that create everything they need from the natural resources of their native land. Villages are usually located on hillsides for growing crops and the surrounding jungles provide building materials like wood and bamboo. They craft all their furnishings and wares from organic materials and the results are often bold and monumental. These raw artifacts are an exciting counterpoint to modern production ‘perfection’. Accordingly they look beautiful in contemporary interiors.

Inspired by the ingenuity and originality of the Naga, the store’s owners Douglas Van Tress and Chauwarin Tuntisak were drawn to their cultural objects. They personally curated the collection over the course of 2 years. The Golden Triangle, known for its progressive “ancient and modern” design aesthetic, is excited to display such a large assemblage of furnishings from this mysterious corner of the world. The show is open to the public for free during regular business hours and every piece is available for purchase.

  • The Golden Triangle is located at 330 N Clark Street, Chicago, IL 60654
  • Hours: Monday – Friday 10am – 6pm, Saturday 10am – 5pm
