Non-Profit’s Book for Book Program Helps Increase Literacy in Low-Income Communities

Bilingual Children’s Book Publisher Provides a Donated Book with Every Purchase

Young Series Bilingual Children's Books With every purchase, one will be donated to a child living in low-income communities where literacy levels are at an all-time low.

MESA, ARIZONA, UNITED STATES, 2018-Oct-01 — /EPR Network/ — Guardian Angel Council, Inc. announces the collaboration of their literacy program aimed at children living in low-income communities with the publisher of bilingual children’s books.  Their Book for Book program, which provides much needed books to children living in low-income communities will be partnering with Grasshoppers Observe Dragonflies Publishing House and its Young Series line of bilingual children’s books effective immediately.

This partnership will provide for much needed age-appropriate children’s book where they are needed most—in low-income communities where studies have shown there is currently 1 book for every 300 children.  The availability and access to age-appropriate books for children living in low-income communities is critical and this partnership answers this issue.

Collaborating with the Young Series bilingual children’s books (Grasshoppers Observe Dragonflies Publishing House; September 8, 2018), with every book purchase, one book will be donated to a child in need.

Below you will find the Top 6 Facts About How Literacy Affects Those Living in the United States:

  2. Reports show that the rate of low literacy in the United States directly costs the healthcare industry over $70 million every year (WriteExpress Corporation, Literacy Statistics).
  3. Children in low-income families have access to fewer reading materials than children of middle-and upper-income families (Lindsay, 2010; Krashen, 2012).
  4. Nearly 85% of all juveniles who face trial in the juvenile court system are functionally illiterate, proving there is a close relationship between illiteracy and crime (Blakenship, 2014).
  5. 2/3 of students who cannot read proficiently by the end of 4th grade will end up in jail or on welfare. Over 70% of America’s inmates cannot read above a 4th grade level (WriteExpress Corporation, Literacy Statistics).
  6. Reading culture provides skills and knowledge that promote literacy by implying that parents’ participation in reading culture will enhance children’s educational attainment in all societies, regardless of the parents’ formal education and social class (Scholastic Access to Books, 2013).

ABOUT THE BOOK FOR BOOK PROGRAM

Guardian Angel Council, Inc. is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit whose mission is to educate and improve the welfare of disadvantaged populations in the community.  The Book for Book program increases childhood literacy by donating a book with every Young Series book purchased.  This distribution is made possible through strategic partnerships with Title I elementary schools to ensure the donations are provided to those who would benefit the most from these bilingual books. Children who receive donated books from the Book for Book program will benefit from having age-appropriate books inside their household and will also see an increase in engagement with parental/guardian involvement where English is not the primary language spoken at home.
