Viral Futuristic February challenge has you collect your trash for a month

BOCA RATON, Florida, 2020-Feb-01 — /EPR Network/ — The 4th annual Futuristic February, a global online challenge that gets people to collect all their trash for one month, will be hosted by the eco-influencer couple Sustainable Duo, Carly Bergman and Brenden Fitzgerald, starting February 1, 2020.

The goal is to get people to realize how much waste they produce, question the environmental impacts of their everyday choices, and then make sustainable changes in their lives.

“There comes a time when we need to look in the mirror and ask ourselves, “Are our personal actions saving or killing this planet?” said Bergman. “We need to hold ourselves accountable for our actions, evolve, and elevate—for animals, for people, and for the planet.”

Throughout February, participants consume as they normally would and allow their recyclables and non-perishable waste to accumulate. By the end of the month, they have an honest visual representation of their waste.

On the last day of February, participants post a picture of their waste with the hashtag #FuturisticFebruary.

“We encourage participants to use the hashtag because it creates a community around this campaign—a place for us to share our experiences and learn from one another,” said Fitzgerald. “This challenge is about all of us growing together for the sake of our planet.”

Futuristic February has gained traction among celebrities and influencers, including professional surfer Alana Blanchard, National Geographic’s plastic-free spokesperson Kathryn Kellogg of Going Zero Waste, sustainable supermodel Petra Nêmcová, and conscious lifestyle blogger Valeria Hinojosa of Water Thru Skin.

While on a trip to Nicaragua in 2017, Bergman noticed the holes in the country’s waste disposal system, so she collected all her trash and brought it home with her. When back in the United States, Bergman collected her waste for a month to see how much she accumulated. She was shocked by the results and launched the first Futuristic February challenge shortly after.

The Sustainable Duo are eco-influencers and zero-waste educators who help people decrease their carbon footprint through sustainable living. They have an online zero-waste store, host wellness retreats, and offer zero-waste and vegan consultations for businesses, events, and individuals. They share practical sustainable swaps and tricks with their nearly 100,000 followers every day on Instagram and YouTube.
