Body = (Little Rock) – Once again, Radio has had its share
of “turkey” moments during the past year. Corey Deitz,
author of “The Cash Cage”, a book which reveals the
inner workings of the Radio business, has released this year’s
list of
“Radio’s Top 10 Turkey Moments of 2004”:
10. Cleveland
radio sportscaster, Chuck Gileti, went to jail after being found
guilty of driving under the influence (for the 3rd time), drug possession,
and other charges.
9. WQZQ (The
Party 102.5)/Nashville morning deejays, Billy Breeze and Marco,
were suspended after a hoax in which they told listeners Britney
Spears was at the station. Fans sent thousands of emails to the
station and even showed up in the
parking lot – for nothing.
8. Former Denver
Radio traffic reporter, Sam Hammer, was been sentenced to federal
prison for 8 years. Hammer, whose real name is Dean Edward Letschka,
admitted having a relationship over the Internet with a 14-year-old
girl who actually turned
out to be an undercover Postal Inspector in Washington, D.C.
7. A host on
a British gardening show inadvertently spent 3 minutes with a caller
explaining how best to grow a plant the caller referred to as "Northern
Lights." The host didn’t realize it’s also the
name for a strong variety of marijuana, besides the cabbage she
thought she was discussing.
6. South African
radio personality, Gareth Cliff, was suspended for two days for
conducting and on-air “interview” with Jesus and receiving
numerous complaints from listeners.
5. A Romanian
DJ, Alin Farcus, seized control of his own radio station and threatened
to jump from a balcony if he wasn’t given the back pay due
him. His boss agreed to fork over the $425 bucks.
4. Jim the Photographer,
a regular on “Ray Lytle's Morning Disaster” heard on
WQLZ-FM, wound up in the hospital after launching bottle rockets
from his buttocks. He suffered burns to his behind and anus.
3. Teapot Tim
from WIHT-FM covered himself in foam padding and let listeners set
off fireworks on him. He wasn’t injured but another person
suffered minors burns - and then the cops showed up.
2. Billy Wayne
Miles called KMCM-FM in Odessa Texas asking for a request. After
3 tries with no success, he made another call: a bomb threat. Miles
was charged with a felony.
1. Lee "Crazy
Cabbie" Mroszak, a regular guest on Howard Stern’s show,
blabbed on the air about avoiding his income taxes. Somebody must
have been listening from the IRS because they brought him up on
charges.
