DirectRooms.com highlights that the island of Bali will see a
series of major celebrations as one of the island’s most important
religious festivals takes place in December.
For eleven days from 8th to 18th December 2010 people will be heading to the nearest
temple to pay respect to the Gods of Bali and to donate food to the spirits of their
ancestors.
Galungan festival is a mix of celebrations and is a symbol of good defeating evil as
told through the tale of Barong and Rangda. Barong is the protector of all Balinese
people and the legend tells of a battle and the eventual conquering of the evil
witch Rangda.
This story is told in the form of a dance with performers wearing colourful costumes
of Barong featuring a head of a lion and a shaggy mane. In the dance Rangda tries to
make Barong’s followers stab themselves with a sword, known as a kris, but the
devotees are protected by a magical trance.
Celebrations for the festival also include a huge feast with families preparing
local dishes of ground pork as well as native fruits and vegetables. People using a hotel in Bali during the time of the event will be able to see the festivities being held
everywhere on the island as residents line the streets to watch the parades.
Lek Boonlert, marketing head at DirectRooms.com commented: “During Galungan Bali is
packed with visitors and people returning home to be with friends and family for the
festival. Hotel availability is going to be tight for the event so people should go
online to book early.”
