  • Recent market issues and trends faced by stakeholders in the UK electricity industry

The reference terms in the report are primarily the 15 DNO’s present in the UK with the bulk of these located in England and Wales, one in Northern Ireland, and two companies in Scotland. The report investigates the financial performance and capital expenditure of the profiled companies and delivers exhaustive insights into challenges faced by the electricity industry as a whole. The report has provided an in-depth coverage of the electricity supply sector with a study of the major competitors and their respective issues.

It must be mentioned that the term electricity generation exclusively considers those companies producing electricity under the requisite generation licenses. Although generation prices are not regulated in either England or Wales, prices for Scottish Hydro-Electric and ScottishPower are indirectly regulated by way of supply price controls. Transmission refers to transmitting electricity from power plants through high voltage wires with a nationwide system extending into Britain’s territorial waters as well. Transmission activities are essentially monopolies functioning under transmission licenses.

The transmission system is maintained and owned by regional players, while the system is operated by a single system operator –the National Grid Electricity Transmission. In Scotland, both companies own and operate their own transmission systems. Price control periods regulate the transmission sector with Ofgem determining the maximum possible revenue operators can recover from end-users.

Distribution pertains to the 14 DNO’s in Great Britain, including the Scottish companies that operate lower voltage distribution systems for delivering electricity to their customers’ location. Seven groups own these networks but there are six independent operators that run smaller networks embedded in DNO’s. As there is only one operator in each area, every DNO is a monopoly. Ofgem has a price control regime to ensure that efficient electricity distributors can earn a fair ROI after operating and capital costs, while simultaneously limiting the charge that can be extracted from customers.

Suppliers have tried to differentiate tariffs in several ways such as the inclusion of gift cards and discounted rates for online account management. There has been a recent increase in tariffs that record wholesale price changes as well as tariffs that allow bundled purchase of energy. Furthermore, suppliers have tariff plans with non-energy services such as boiler technology and maintenance that assists customers in controlling their energy usage online. This trend is on a growth path as energy suppliers move into the ‘connected home’ and ‘home services’ markets with dwindling profits in retail energy, compelling suppliers to differentiate their portfolio to stay ahead.
