Ural Federal University, Russia, is ready to host the International Young Physicists’ Tournament

Ekaterinburg, RUSSIA, November 27, 2015 — /EPR NETWORK/ — One of the key events in the life of school-students who are interested in physics will be held in Ekaterinburg in the summer of 2016. Ural Federal University hosts the International Young Physicists’ Tournament (IYPT). Since 1988, the tournament was held in Moscow and then in many countries of the world. In 2016 it will finally return to its birthplace, Russia. The President of IYPT Executive Committee, Martin Plesch, arrived to Ekaterinburg with a delegation in order to see if the university is ready to receive several hundreds of young participants and their tutors.

The application to host IYPT was prepared by the UrFU Vice-Rector for Science Vladimir Kruzhaev. He hopes that the team of UrFU Lyceum, which is now preparing to take part in the National Competition of Young Physicists, will also participate in IYPT. For many years the teams of UrFU Lyceum have been participating in the National tournaments and have already represented Russia at IYPT in the Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Finland, and Ukraine.

The International Young Physicists’ Tournament was founded by the physicist Evgeny Yunosov in 1988 in Moscow. It is a competition of high school students in the ability to solve complex research problems and present the solutions in scientific discussions. About 25-30 teams from all over the world participate in the tournament. They are given one year to prepare solutions for 17 different tasks.

In August 2013 the organizers of IYPT received the medal of the International Commission of Physical Education (ICPE). One of the most prestigious awards of the tournament has been the Lenin Komsomol Prize in the field of physical education (1989).

This is not the first time Ural Federal University is involved in organization of high level competitions. In June 2014, in collaboration with the government of the Sverdlovsk region and the administration of Ekaterinburg, UrFU hosted the final of The ACM-ICPC International Collegiate Programming Contest, which brought together 122 teams of students from 44 countries.
