Palm oil output in 2016, was hit by the strong effects of the lingering El Nino weather in 2015. In 2017, global palm oil production is expected to grow by 6 million tonnes.

The South-East Asian palm oil production went down in 2016 to 3.26 tonnes/hectare as compared with 3.62 tonnes/hectare in 2015 due to El Nino. This caused the global palm oil output to reduce for the first time in almost 20 years. Indonesia is the largest palm oil producer in the world followed by Malaysia and Thailand. Indonesia and Malaysia together account for over 85% of the world supply of palm oil.

In 2016, Indonesia produced 34.5 million tons of crude palm oil, a drop of 3% year-on-year due to the El Nino weather phenomenon. The 34.5 million tons of Indonesian palm oil that were produced in 2016 included 31.5 million of CPO and 3 million tons of palm kernel oil (PKO). In 2017, is is expected that Indonesia will produce 36.5 million tonnes of palm oil.
