Alt-rocker Paula Punch releases new single ‘Holy Water’

SYDNEY, Australia, 2018-Aug-21 — /EPR Network/ — Singer-songwriter Paula Punch has released her latest rock single, “Holy Water.” The track comes on the coattails of her popular full-length debut record, “Don’t Look Down,” and hints at a more forceful tone in the wake of her recent summer tour in California and Tennessee. Like the rest of Paula Punch’s repertoire, “Holy Water” has been proudly published on the Punch Park independent record label without the involvement of the corporate music industry. Verve-charged, passion-filled, and bearing hints of power pop this time, “Holy Water” is sure to turn heads of Paula Punch fans new and old.

Sydney, Australia’s Paula Punch is building an ever increasing fan base for her heartfelt music in her still-fledgling career as an indie rocker. In just over a year, she has gone from café open-mic favorite to the singer-songwriter of five successful singles, three official music videos, an American tour with talented singer-songwriter Jackie Bristow, and a debut LP record which continues to rack up download and streaming numbers. This newfound attention is unlikely to surprise those who know her, though.

The early musical experiences was mainly The Beatles played non-stop by my brother,” writes Punch. “After hearing this music – I had to get a guitar.”

Punch’s usual cited influences include Joni Mitchell, Linda Ronsandt, The Eurythmics, Traveling Wilburys, First Aid Kit, Bob Dylan and Ron Sexsmith. Her own style sometimes draws comparisons to the artists of the legendary Lilith Fair festival of the 1990s, particularly Sheryl Crow, Tori Amos and Sarah McLachlan.

Her new single, “Holy Water,” bears this sound perhaps more than any of her previous releases, having the gritty tonality of Tori Amos while maintaining the acoustic-electric, power-strumming tone of Sheryl Crow. Perhaps ironically, while Punch has hinted that the track is part of a forthcoming larger group of songs with a common sonic feel, it is also a song written long before the distribution of her first official single.

“…About 20 years ago in our little house in Balmain Sydney,” says Paula Punch. “Our two young sons were asleep and my husband, as usual, was working a late one at the studio, and I was singing in the bathroom as I could shut the door so I didn’t wake the boys, and it always sounded much better in there. This song came to me almost fully formed as if I was channeling it. Strange and wonderful when that happens.”

Paula has her longtime friends and successful musical artists Jackie Bristow and Mark Punch, singing soulful harmonies. The track was recording at Electric Avenue Studios in Sydney by Phil Punch and Robin Gist. The funky keyboards are delivered by Marko Simec, drums by Pete Drummond and bass by Ian Lees.

It’s a heartfelt and emotional song about innate guilt, and release,” she says, “forgiving yourself and searching for new beginnings. Perhaps my Catholic upbringing has weighed in here, somehow. But it’s really a love song – finding someone who sees you as you really are ‘and who you want to be,’ unlocking your own passion for life. Sometimes it takes someone else to reflect back one’s one inherent spirit.”
